What is SwimRun?
SwimRun is one of the fastest-growing endurance sports in the world — combining trail running and open water swimming into one continuous adventure. Originating in Sweden with the legendary ÖTILLÖ “island-to-island” races, SwimRun challenges athletes to move seamlessly through nature by alternating between running and swimming multiple times throughout the course.
Unlike a triathlon, there are:
- No transition areas
- No bikes
- No changing gear
You run in the same gear you swim in — including your shoes — creating a nonstop, immersive race experience through forests, trails, lakes, and rugged terrain.
At the Garden State SwimRun, athletes will alternate between trail running and open water swimming across the scenic lakes and lush forest trails of Dickerson Mine Preserve. Expect crystal-clear water, runnable singletrack, and an experience that feels more like an expedition than a traditional race.
SwimRun can be completed:
- Solo
- Or as a 2-person team
Team racing is a huge part of SwimRun culture, where partners work together through every swim and run segment.
One of the most unique aspects of SwimRun is the constant rhythm of movement:
Run. Swim. Run. Swim. Repeat.
The format creates a fun, social, and adventure-focused atmosphere that appeals to:
- Trail runners
- Open water swimmers
- Triathletes
- Adventure racers
- Anyone looking for a fresh challenge outdoors
Whether you’re racing hard or simply looking for an unforgettable summer adventure, SwimRun delivers a race experience unlike anything else
